Sedation Protocol
Prior to Sedation
1. Call Patient
Pt needs to be called the day before to remind them about NPO and escort.
4. Be Prepared
Have valve bag mask out and ready for use. Have emergency kit out and ready for use- Check expiration dates.
7. Verify
Verify tx be done.
2. Forms
Have all consents and form 1417 printed and ready to review.
5. Set Up
Set up and bleed NS drip bag. Have tray, bandaids, gauze, alcohol, catheter, tourniquet, needles, and syringes out and labeled.
8. Time Out
Have “Time Out” with pt and docs.
3. Verify
Verify pt is NPO for last 6 hours. Verify pt has escort and escort will be available during sedation.
6. Vitals
Get and record the patient's vitals.
9. Communicate
Make sure all Rx have been communicated to pt and front desk.
Following Sedation
1. Monitor
Monitor pt. Monitor pt. Monitor pt. NEVER LEAVE PT ALONE!
4. Complete
Complete 1417 prior to pt release.
2. Re-Verify
Re-verify with docs any Rx or special post-op
instructions.
5. Care Bag
Make sure escort leaves with post op care bag if needed.
3. Instructions
Give Rx and post op instructions to escort.
